Who Is Your Hero? Why?

Wow! It’s hard to choose one. My hero is most definitely my mother, first and foremost for teaching me how to be a renaissance woman.

What Is Your Favorite Sound?

Definitely someone reacting to something that I didn’t foresee them reacting to (or worried about them missing) in a film I’ve created.

What Project would a laptop help you with?

I’m in the process of curating a series of social events called Moolaadé — an ode to Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembène – whose film of the same name translates to “magical protection.” The goal of Moolaadé is to create safe spaces for young black women to discuss “the perils of being young and black in America” and connect with older women of color within the community who can provide personal and professional support.

How Would A Laptop Help You?

As a filmmaker, educator and organizer a laptop would help in a wide variety of tasks. Writing scripts, proposals, offloading footage from a shoot, editing, screening a creative piece to developing curriculum, sending emails, writing grants, newsletters, designing flyers, editing photos… there’s so much!

What do you love about this project?

That it will take unexpected twists and turns and shape itself into what the women need it to be.  I’m also excited about the expansion of my own awareness and the rich community of women that will grow together.
