What Are You Most Passionate About?

Equity and effecting change in marginalized communities. I believe that we can create a society where we value people and community above anything else.

Who Is Your Hero? Why?

Fred Hampton was a 21 year old man from Chicago who dedicated his life to nonviolent activism and community organizing. First through the NAACP and then through the Black Panther Party, Fred galvanized young people from all walks of life to stand together and effect change in their communities. He worked to bring more recreational facilities, free breakfast programs, political education classes, and educational resources to Chicago and brought about a nonaggression pact between Chicago’s most dangerous gangs. At such a young age, Hampton was able to visualize and bring to reality a better and united Chicago.

What Is Your Favorite Sound?

The sound of ocean waves – it reminds me of how expansive and powerful the ocean is. It’s a very soothing sound and reminds me of how big the world is.

What Project Would A Laptop Help You With?

I am working on a leadership institute. The working title is LeadHERship Institute and will be a year long program for 25 young women of color looking to effect change in their communities.

By the end of the first period, we expect to provide 25 young women access to resources, opportunities, and a wrap-around of support in order for them to succeed in whatever issue they are passionate about. During the course of 12 months, young women will also be matched with fem/mentors in their respective issue of interest, participate workshops and seminars on healing, spiritual health, financial literacy, and positive self awareness and relationships. They will also be provided stipends to create projects within their communities related to issues like environmental justice, reproductive health, criminal justice reform, etc.

How would a laptop help you?

To ensure that this leadership institute is as accessible as possible we are making all aspects free and want to ensure that women have laptops to participate in monthly webinars and biweekly check-ins with mentors.

What do you love about this project?

That we will be allowing the people closest to he problem’s to have the resources, mentor-ship, and platforms to create the solutions and that it will be young women of color tackling these issues on local levels.
